The Silent Sentinel: A Polar Bear's Struggle in a Warming Arctic

On the thinning ice of the Arctic, a polar bear stands sentinel, its white fur blending into the snow. These apex predators, uniquely adapted to life on sea ice, rely on floating platforms to hunt seals. But with Arctic temperatures rising at three times the global average, their habitat is vanishing. Female bears now spend months on land, fasting as ice-free seasons lengthen. Their cubs, once sheltered in snow dens, face higher mortality rates as warmer winters reduce den stability. Despite their massive size—males weighing up to 800 kg—polar bears are vulnerable to starvation and drowning as ice retreats. Watching a mother guide her cubs across a shrinking ice floe, I was struck by their resilience and the urgent need to address climate change.
